Course Objectives

The purpose of this class is to develop English speaking abilities through practice. This is a skill-oriented and student-centered course. It focuses on communicating about practical daily subjects and focuses more on developing fluency. Students will learn the fundamental skills of speaking and participate in different speaking activities with the help of a variety of listening and reading materials. This course has the following specific objectives:

1.       To improve students’ listening and speaking skills

2.       To strengthen students’ learning ability (predicting, taking notes, making inference, cooperating with others, etc.)

3.       To enhance students’ culture literacy and intercultural awareness

4.       To improve students’ independent and creative thinking ability

Attendance 5%

1.   Attendance for this class is mandatory and will constitute part of students’ grade. Students are required to come to every class ready to actively participate. For each unexcused class a student misses, he or she will lose 2%. More than three total absences will result in an absolute failure of this course.

2.   The best way to earn participation points is to ask questions, give comments and actively participate in discussion and debate.

3.   In their mid-term and final exams, students will be evaluated based on their diction, tone, content, delivery, fluency, use of speaking techniques.
